Week 5 Day 1

Monday of this week was a good way to ease into the week, especially since some of us were feeling a little bit under the weather upon realizing that we’re already more than two thirds of the way through the program.

We went to class as usual and went over last week’s test as well as learning about the fifth case, which is the last one we had left to learn.

After school, we all walked a few blocks to Andy’s food market, where we had the lunch that we had ordered the last time we were there. I got potato были with sour cream and a lemon tart for desert (it was really good!).



We hung around there for a little bit and waited for our language partners to show uo since we were doing another city quest that day to visit the dendrarium (a public garden with a lot of different flowers and small lakes).

We walked around the dendrarium for a while, so it was really lucky that we were there on a day with good weather, if only a bit too hot for my taste. But we were still able to enjoy all the flowers and various other plants!

After we all finished up, a small group of us took a bus to the center and walked up Pushkin street to Folk’s Croissants, a cafe some of the others liked and where we could sit for a while and do homework.

After I had gotten my homework done and finished it started to get a bit late, I walked over to the closest bus stop and went home.

When I got home, I had some dinner, even though I wasn’t very hungry, and then Vera and I went for a walk around the grounds of the police hospital, which is only a few blocks away from our apartment building. In the gardens, they had a lot of wooden sculptures of animals, so Vera taught me the Russian words for them, which was actually pretty useful (I don’t remember them all, but there were some that did stick with me).

One of the best parts of my day, however, was when I Skyped my mom from the cafe and got to introduce her to some of my friends; so it was a good day with a lot of high points!

Week 1 Day 2

After breakfast at the hotel, we packed our bags and had them stored in the lobby, because we were meeting our host families that afternoon! Once again, we all agreed that we should procrastinate on thinking so we could avoid high nerves. We then had a presentation about navigating in the city and downloaded some helpful apps. We also learned about the different neighborhoods in Chisinau. There is the “centru”, located at the city center; “botanica”, near the botanical gardens; “telecentru”, located outside of the ‘centru’; “riscani”, which is separated from the rest of the city by a bridge (where our hotel was located); “buiucani”, which has the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe (fun fact); and “ciocana” which has a large Romanian population. (Unfortunately, I could not find a map of the neighborhoods.) Week 4 Day 3

Wednesday was probably one of my favorite days from this week. We had class as usual, and then we got a takeout lunch from La Placinte to eat in the courtyard in the university, since we had to drive a good distance for our excursion that day. The food came in these cute little boxes, kind of the equivalent of pizza delivery in the U.S. There were three kinds of Placinte: potato, meat (I think it was chicken, but I couldn’t really tell), and apple. These were also more cylindrical as opposed to the round ones we had had before, which was nice because it meant that we each just got our own box without having to share. The boxes. Week 3 Day 1

Almost up to date! Yesterday (Monday) was a pretty great day. I was feeling a bit more tired than usual in the morning, but I still managed to get to school on time, luckily. It was also Cameron’s birthday, so we all made sure to talk about anything but that, until lunchtime. We bought some pastries at a bakery, since we were having an independent lunch, and then bought some ice cream to eat on our way to the American Councils building. We were meeting there for our third city quest, where we were going to visit the National Library; but since they only allow limited numbers we split into groups with half of us visiting on Monday and the other half on Tuesday. We got to the library, where we had to apply for a library card in order to gain entry, and once we got ours we went upstairs to go look for some books.
