Week 2 Day 3

Since I’m so behind on my writing, I’ll probably try to keep these posts comparatively short.

I got to school on time on Wednesday (no more protests), and classes went on as usual.

Originally, our plan was to go to the Ethnographic Museum after school, but they randomly decided to close for a cleaning day, so we had to switch this excursion to another day and change our lunch plans.

We walked over to Andy’s Food Market, where we had a tomato soup and блины (pretty much moldovan crepes) filled with potatoes, chicken and mushrooms, and topped with sour cream. It was really good! We also got to order our food for the next time we go there in a few weeks, and I made sure to get as much food as I possibly could for 110 lei (our price limit for group lunches, and about 6 dollars) which included a main course, side and dessert—impressive considering you can’t even get an appetizer for $6 in the U.S.

Our tomato soup with garlic bread.

After lunch we walked back to the university to watch a soviet movie. Apparently, it was a very well-known movie with popular songs and frequently quoted lines. Thankfully, we watched it with subtitles.

The movie was called «Кавказкая Пленница, или Новы Приключения Шурика» which translates roughly to “The Caucasian Captive, or Shurik’s New Adventures”. It was...interesting. There were definitely some outdated situations (the movie is from 1966) and cultural elements that might not be well-received in the U.S., but I’m not quite sure how to describe it accurately. Overall, though, our whole group really enjoyed watching it.

Since Elizabeth and I were going to a concert at the theater that night, we decided to head home as soon as the movie was done to eat dinner and try to finish up some homework. Shortly after six, we got on the bus to come back to to the city and walked around in the marketplace a bit before heading into the theater.

The program of the concert was a Schubert quintet with piano and Beethoven’s triple concerto (opus 56).

My ticket from the concert.

The concert was done by 9:00, and we headed home right then to make sure we weren’t cutting too close to curfew, which is 10:00. Once I got home, I did my homework and went straight to bed.

In the end, it was a long day, but well worth it!
